Gynae Cancer Screening and prevention

Uterine, cervical and Ovarian cancer are some of the most common Gynaecological cancers. Early diagnosis and prevention of these cancers is very important for women’s health. Gynaecological screening tests are very important for improving the quality of life through early detection of a serious condition. Pap smear and colposcopy are screening procedures for cervical cancer. Ultrasounds help us to diagnose uterine cancer by the detection of abnormal growth in the uterus. The pelvic ultrasound scan helps to diagnose ovarian cysts and cancer. All these screening methods are performed to achieve the goal of prevention and early detection.

A brief account of different Gynaecological Problems

Almost every woman at some stage of their life experiences any of the gynaecological problems mentioned below. Here is everything you need to know about some of the common gynaecological problems that women encounter. If you have any of the below mentioned condition, no need to get distressed or worried, we are here for your help.

Miscarriages

Loss of pregnancy before the 20th week is called a miscarriage. The term “miscarriage” itself suggests that there is something wrong with carrying out a pregnancy. It usually happens in the first three months of pregnancy.

Cramping, spotting, heavy bleeding, abdominal pain, pelvic pain weakness and back pain are all experienced in miscarriage. If you have any of these symptoms reach us at Pretoria North Medical Centre and get the medical care you need.

Painful periods

During menstruation, some pain, cramping, and discomfort are normal but severe pain that disrupts the normal working of life is abnormal. This abnormal painful bleeding is called dysmenorrhoea. Other symptoms along with pain also include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache and dizziness. Visit us and get an expert opinion about your issue and live life to the fullest.

Ovarian cysts

Ovarian cysts are the fluid-filled sacs that are located either inside or on the surface of the ovaries. Ovaries are the important organs of the female reproductive system that are involved in the production of eggs and hormones that are responsible for the maintenance of the reproductive system.

Cysts are painless and cause no symptoms most of the time. But if the cyst grows in size symptoms can appear. The condition can get worse and can cause complications if left untreated. CT, MRI and ultrasound help in the diagnosis of the cysts. Abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, painful bowel movements, breast tenderness, lower back pain, and painful intercourse are some of the symptoms of ovarian cysts. If you feel the above symptoms report to our clinic and get treatment.

Fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that take place inside or around the uterus. They appear during the child-bearing years and are also known as leiomyomas. Genetic changes, hormonal changes, and growth factors are some of the factors responsible for fibroids.

Ectopic pregnancy

Pregnancy occurs when the fertilized egg gets implanted in the uterus, which is the normal implant site. Sometimes it gets implanted at the wrong site and the condition is called an ectopic pregnancy. The most common site for implantation is the fallopian tube which is the carrier of the egg to the uterus. Ovaries, abdominal cavities, and lower parts of the uterus (cervix) are also sites for ectopic pregnancies. To prevent any serious health complications, the ectopic tissue is removed as it can’t survive outside the uterus.

Vaginal bleeding, upset stomach, vomiting, abdominal cramps, pain in the shoulder, dizziness, and weakness are some of the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is derived from the word endometrium which is the innermost lining of the uterus. In endometriosis, the endometrium-like tissue develops outside the uterus. It increases the incidence of infertility and makes it difficult for women to get pregnant.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

As the name explains itself, numerous fluid-filled cysts develop in the ovaries in this condition. In this condition, abnormal amounts of androgens (male sex hormones) are produced by the ovaries which are normally present very less in females. The normal menstrual cycle gets disturbed in this condition. Also missed periods, excessive body hair, weight gain, acne, and infertility are some of the symptoms.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the condition in which the person cannot prevent the leaking out of her urine. It is more common among older adults and women. In women, it is particularly present in those who have given birth and are going through menopause. Most gynaecological conditions are also responsible for this health problem due to their impact on the bladder muscles.

Gynae Surgeries

Surgeries that are carried out at our clinic include:

Hysterectomy

The surgical removal of uterus (womb) is known as Hysterectomy. It is the organ in which implantation of the fertilized egg occurs and the whole pregnancy takes place.

Reasons for performing this surgery include uterine fibroids, uterine prolapse, uterine; ovarian; and cervical cancers, abnormal vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain.

Myomectomy

The removal of fibroids from the uterus by preserving the uterus itself is known as myomectomy. This surgical procedure in contrast to Hysterectomy retains the reproductive potential of women.
